A recent EIPS Instagram post shared the various ways parents can engage with their child's learning. Engagement includes reading with your child at home, being involved in school councils, attending conferences, or completing a survey.

At Glen Allan, there are many ways to engage with our school community, even in this blog post there is the playground survey, a call for book fair volunteers, and information about lessons happening in classrooms that you can practice at home.

OPPORTUNITY

Book Fair Volunteers

From October 21-25, we will have Scholastic Book Fair happening in our library. If you are interested in volunteering to help out during Book Fair, please email Mrs. Brownlee (Assistant Principal and Library Teacher) crystal.brownlee@eips.ca

INFORMATION

Breathwork / Regulation Strategy Contest

Have you ever tried Dragon Breathing, Cupcake Breathing or even 5 Finger Breathing? Students are being encouraged to try different breathing techniques to help calm their minds and body so they are ready to learn. Each day on announcements a new breathing technique is introduced and encouraged to practice in class. Throughout the next few weeks students will practice these regulation strategies and try to find which ones work best for them. A bulletin board displaying all the techniques has been created outside of the gym. On the bulletin board are also ballots for students to select which breathing techniques and why work best for them. Ballots are then submitted to the office for a change to win a prize.

Ask your child which breathing technique is their favorite so far!

Additionally, Ms. Gatti, an EIPS Specialized Support Consultant has begun her 4-part "Playshop" series our Grades 1-5. Through this series of classroom visits students will gain a deeper understanding our brain on stress and what we can do to help regulate our body and emotions. The intent is that the strategies introduced each session will be practiced by students and staff daily. Ask your child to share what they've learned in class and you can practice at home too!

FIRST NATIONS, MÉTIS, AND INUIT INFORMATION

Orange Shirt Day is being recognized at Glen Allan on Friday, September 27. It is a day for remembrance and is an act of reconciliation. Students will be learning that this is not a celebratory or joyous occasion, but rather one where we focus on empathy and understanding. Some of the activities that we will be doing during the week are:

  • orange shirt designs
  • written reflections
  • read alouds of age-appropriate books

We encourage you to have conversations with your child(ren) about the meaning behind National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, wearing Orange Shirts, and how to respond to the Calls to Action.

Strathcona County has events planned at the Strathcona County Community Centre - Agora on Monday, September 30 from 1-3pm if your family is interested in attending.
