November 4 BUZZ

BEE Kind Queen Bees

Happy Monday Glen Allan Families!

Last week we were treated to incredible cotton candy skies as we greeted students in the morning. On Thursday, we had a great day with the many ghosts, princesses, superheroes, Harry Potter fans and other creative characters walking the red carpet catwalk at our assembly. You can check out some of the pictures captured in the gallery below. This past weekend two Glen Allan teams played in the EIPS Elementary Volleyball tournament hosted by Bev Facey. Our teams represented Glen Allan well, playing with confidence, positivity, and encouraging others.

FIRST NATIONS, MÉTIS, AND INUIT INFORMATION

Metis Week

Each year on November 16, Canadians pay tribute to the Right Honorable Louis Riel by holding a commemorative ceremony to mark the anniversary of his execution. In Alberta, the week surrounding this date is celebrated as Métis Week. This week at Glen Allan, teachers will facilitate activities in the classroom and use literature and videos to deepen students’ understanding of Métis Week.

Rock Your Mocs

Did you know...

Until 1951, the Indian Act restricted Indigenous ceremonies, including the wearing of traditional regalia. Residential schools also prohibited traditional dress. Before 1951, Indigenous peoples needed permission from the Indian agent to wear ceremonial dress off reserve.

Rock Your Mocs is an initiative for Indigenous Peoples to reclaim their traditions and celebrate their identities. Each pair of moccasins tells a unique story about the maker, their nation, the materials used, and the significance behind them.

Across the country, people are proudly wearing their moccasins (or favorite slippers/shoes) in schools, workplaces, and communities to promote cultural pride and encourage Indigenous peoples to share their stories.

This is a great opportunity for the Glen Allan community to learn about the diversity of Indigenous cultures and support local Indigenous communities. We invite all students, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to celebrate Rock Your Mocs Day at Glen Allan on Wednesday, November 6!!
